Founders of Rural Kind Mike and Nia Watt create simple, functional and beautiful bags and lifestyle accessories. In their workshop, a former school in Carmarthenshire, Wales, they craft durable pieces for everyday wear using waxed canvas and leather.
Bike bag crafted exclusively for TOAST by Rural Kind, a company based in the Welsh countryside which is committed to creating simple, functional and durable pieces. Handmade by founders Mike and Nia in their small workshop from heavyweight waxed cotton canvas sourced from a factory in Scotland.
With back tabs for attaching to the handlebars of your bicycle and an adjustable shoulder strap for carrying once you reach your destination. The foldover top and front slip pocket are both secured via the buckled leather tab. The leather is sourced from a Devon tannery that uses only local hides, and is hand-finished with natural oils and waxes.

In the Studio with Mike Watt of Rural Kind
Mike Watt’s appreciation for functional design and Welsh vernacular architecture feeds into his handmade Rural Kind pieces. “There is never any ornamentation,” he says. “I love things that are functional, but also beautiful. I want things to work well, and look purposeful.”
The products respond to the rugged natural landscape surrounding his workshop, which necessitates hardwearing and robust materials. Mike sources most of these materials from the UK – the waxed cotton canvas from a longstanding company in Dundee; the leather from a Devon tannery that uses only local hides, and is hand-finished with natural oils and waxes.
Rural Kind has previously designed garden-focused products for TOAST. Our Autumn Winter collection features a waxed cotton log carrier, a leather bike bag and a card wallet making kit.
