In our series Community Threads, we bring together the creative individuals who make up our TOAST shop teams and explore the ways in which they thoughtfully style pieces from our new collections.

In this instalment, we visit our Islington shop. With a natural wood floor and extended rear mezzanine, it is situated on Upper Street in a conservation area, TOAST Islington is located among theatres, galleries, shops and is a stone's throw from the Camden Passage.

Sage

Sage has been working at TOAST Islington since September 2024. She recently visited the Marisol exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. “I love her combination of pop art with folk art and use of satire in her wooden sculptures and especially enjoyed her collaborations designing props and costumes for contemporary ballet performances.”

Closer to home, she enjoys the calm of Hampstead Heath, walking through the woodlands, sitting in the meadows and swimming in Kenwood Ladies’ Pond.

Sage is a 5’5” and wears a UK 6. She has chosen the Button Through Cotton Linen Poplin Dress. “I appreciate the versatility of the button through style, with the option to wear it as a dress or layering piece. The cinched waist adds a textural element that creates a beautifully elevated look.”

Danielle

As a member of the TOAST team for a year and a half, Danielle has discovered her favourite lunch spot in Islington; St Mary’s Church Garden is just a stone’s throw away from the shop and is the perfect spot for watching the world go by.

She is currently reading Henry and June by Anaïs Nin. “The book is Nin’s real diary from the 1930s, documenting her relationships with the couple Henry and June while she is still married to her husband, Hugo. It’s quite scandalous, exploring her artistic desire and intense passions.”

Danielle is 5’5” and UK 8/10. She has chosen the Applique Pea Shoot Jacket. “The appliqué really pops, and the silhouette feels playful. Paired with the wide-leg trousers, it’s effortless but still impactful.”

Niamh

Niamh joined TOAST last summer. A graduate of Textile Design, she loves to keep in touch with the creative world through knitting, painting and material research, as well as exhibition visits (her most recent being Ben Edge: Children of Albion at Fitzrovia Chapel). On weekends, she loves to spend time with friends at The Robin in Stroud Green.

“The walls are muraled in paintings of the pub and its local patrons that perfectly capture the bright, close-knit spirit of the people the pub brings together. It’s my favourite way to enjoy creativity with people I love.”

Niamh is 5’4” and wears a UK 10. Here she styles the Cotton Linen Poplin Shirt and Cotton Linen Poplin Skirt. “I adore the bright colour of this look. It’s a glimpse into the warmer months of the year as the Spring Summer colours start to emerge within the collections, and you can never go wrong with a matching set.”

Cally

Cally has worked at TOAST for nearly two years. When not thinking up her next craft project in Loop London down Islington’s Camden Passage, she knits at home with Bombay Bicycle Club’s current album Flaws on repeat.

“I recently visited The Photographers Gallery to see Zofia Rydet: Sociological Record which documents domestic life in Poland from the 1970s to the 1990s. She beautifully captured different homes, women and life across Poland featuring people's collections of folk craft and handmade belongings.”

Cally is 5’7” and wears a UK 8. She wears the Hal Micro Houndstooth Cotton Linen Workwear Jacket with the Carys Micro Houndstooth Wide Leg Trousers. “I love the attention to tiny details and intricacies of the Micro Houndstooth pattern. The loose trouser legs are so comfortable making them great for work and also lounging. The trousers paired with the matching jacket becomes the perfect, easy uniform for everyday wear.”
