Yuichi Romita Ceramics

Malmö-based ceramicist Yuichi Romita crafts wheel-thrown tableware, left unglazed to honour the clay’s natural character. Rooted in the Nanban Yakishime pottery style, each piece is wheel-thrown and wood-fired, resulting in a distinctive form and finish.

An unglazed stoneware tea cup, crafted by New Maker Yuichi Romita. Shaped on the wheel and wood-fired, each form carries natural variation in tone and texture.

Based in Malmö, Sweden, Yuichi draws on techniques honed during a four-year ceramics apprenticeship in Japan. His elegant, functional tableware reflects an intentional balance of tradition and innovation.

This item is part of our New Makers programme. In its eighth year, five makers demonstrating excellence in skill, originality and craftsmanship have been chosen by a TOAST panel. We offer a platform to sell their pieces as well as mentoring until the end of this year, with full profits being returned to them.

Stoneware. Each piece is wood-fired, resulting in a natural variation in tone and surface. Subtle changes may emerge with use, reflecting its material and making. Wash gently with warm water. A small amount of mild detergent can be used if necessary. Allow to dry fully before storing. Avoid leaving liquids inside for extended periods. Not suitable for dishwasher or microwave use. Beyond Tradition

Having grown up in England, Yuichi Romita travelled to Japan after university to reconnect with his mother’s roots. There we was introduced to a Nanban Yakishime pottery workshop, practising a style of ceramics recognised by its unglazed, wood-fired finish.

“I spent four years of living and breathing a particular type of pottery,” he reflects. “Now, in my practice, I want to push boundaries and be continuously curious.”

Based in Mälmo, Sweden, Yuichi balances inherited craftsmanship with a sense of individualism. While he still favours wood firing and wheel-throwing, he plays with techniques that push both the material and the process to their limits.
