This one-of-a-kind striped skirt has been created by London-based fashion designer and artist Bethany Williams for TOAST Renewed, using items from past TOAST collections that have been either damaged or returned to our warehouse. It features multiple draped layers for a sculptural impression. The top layer is adjustable and constructed from deconstructed striped shirts, with the stripes moving in different directions. It is accompanied by a separate net underlayer.

“I wanted to create an historical, almost antique feeling but reinterpret it in a contemporary way,” says Bethany. “The inspiration comes from family photographs of my great-grandmother, alongside archival imagery from my research into Manx heritage. I have been interested in taking these historical shapes and allowing them to become something new. I draped the shape on the stand and Alex constructed it, before I hand stitched elements into place. Underneath is a separate skirt made from netting brought through the TOAST Circle Programme, creating another layer beneath the striped skirt. I wanted this old feeling but in a modern way, with the two pieces designed to be worn together.”

Striped cotton. Separate nylon net underlayer. Draped, layered construction. Asymmetric shape.

This style is part of TOAST Renewed By, our limited-edition collaboration series, which sees garments transformed by guest artists through traditional textile handcrafts, honouring both their past and their potential future.

TOAST Renewed By Bethany Williams

“The idea was to reference historical garments, reinterpreted through a contemporary shape. Underneath the striped skirt is a separate tulle skirt which came through TOAST Circle. I draped the fabrics and Alex from Making for Change constructed them, before I hand-stitched the elements into place.”
