This one-of-a-kind mini kilt has been created by London-based fashion designer and artist Bethany Williams for TOAST Renewed, using items from past TOAST collections that have been either damaged or returned to our warehouse. It is inspired by Manx tartan and is intended to be worn over the patchworked trousers from the collection. The waistband is created from existing denim garments, while the body combines wool, shirting, printed silk scarves and cotton plaids from the TOAST Circle programme. The silk scarves were overdyed first so that the different materials could sit together within the same brown tone.
“I left the hems raw because I wanted the piece to feel slightly not quite right - unfinished and a little ghostly,” says Bethany. “I worked with Making for Change on the construction and developed the pleating myself. The print on the silk scarves is an original artwork of myself, my mum and my great-grandmother leaning on each other’s shoulders in the Isle of Man. I wanted to show how our loved ones remain living with us, and how their guidance remains. Mustard yellow became an important colour throughout the collection and continues as a thread through this piece.”
Cotton, wool, polyamide and silk. Panelled construction. Buckle and eyelet fastening. Raw edge finish.
This style is part of TOAST Renewed By, our limited-edition collaboration series, which sees garments transformed by guest artists through traditional textile handcrafts, honouring both their past and their potential future.
Mix of fibres: cotton, wool, polyamide, silk. Dry clean.
Made in the United Kingdom.
As this piece has been repaired, extra care should be taken when cleaning. It is also best to avoid jewellery that may catch or snag.
