This one-of-a-kind kilt has been created by London-based fashion designer and artist Bethany Williams for TOAST Renewed, constructed from different materials from the TOAST Circle programme, including wool, striped shirting and printed silk. The front panel is made from a mustard-yellow scarf and the hem is left raw.
“The kilt is inspired by Manx tartan and traditional workwear kilts, but I wanted to bring the shape into something more contemporary,” says Bethany. “It has two buckle fastenings, which are deliberately slightly off-centre, creating the off-kilter feeling that runs through the collection. The silk scarves were originally different colours, so they were first overdyed to bring them into the collection’s palette. Holly at Orto Print Studio then hand screen-printed the four-colour Lineage artwork onto them. The artwork shows myself, my mum and my great-grandmother leaning on each other’s shoulders in the Isle of Man. I wanted to show how our loved ones remain living with us and how their guidance remains. I pleated the panels and worked with Making for Change on the construction. The hem is left raw to give the kilt a slightly ghostly quality.”
Cotton, wool, mohair and silk. Buckle and eyelet fastening. Raw edge finish.
