Jacob Marks Pine Resin

Jacob Marks has developed a craft around pine resin, a natural substance extracted from tree bark. Across a range of functional and decorative objects, he highlights the material's translucency and tone, shaping it into sculptural forms with rich, organic textures.

A sculptural table light, crafted by New Maker Jacob Marks. The paper structure is dipped into molten pine resin, a natural substance sourced from Portuguese pine, fir and cedar trees. Designed to highlight the translucency and amber colour of the material, casting a warm glow.

Jacob's inventive use of pine resin is expressed through a distinctive range of decorative vessels and home accessories. Based in London, he is motivated by the material's renewable and biodegradable properties.

A Material Calling

Jacob Marks found his unconventional material, pine resin, by chance. While studying Furniture Design, he ordered a small packet of the natural substance to use as an adhesive and began experimenting. “I wondered, how could I work with it to do something different?”

Now, Jacob has built a practice around pine resin, producing vessels and functional homeware that balance a primal quality with a refined, contemporary finish. “It’s very fragile, so I often combine it with other materials. It depends on what you want to get out of it.”

His contribution to the TOAST New Makers collection includes both functional and decorative objects, made using pine resin mixed with charcoal and jute fibres to create a range of tones and textures.
