Grace McCarthy Pottery
Based in east London, potter Grace McCarthy is interested in the relationships we form with everyday objects and uses simplicity to draw focus to the firing process. She creates pieces with earthy colours, mottled speckled surfaces and dynamic brushstroke patterns, making each unique.
Weighty pestle and mortar made from vulcan black clay by potter Grace McCarthy, who is based in London. The mortar is thrown to a rounded shape, while the pestle has a smooth, tapered form. Each varies slightly in shape.

Each ceramic piece has been thrown or pressed and glazed by hand. Due to the handmade nature, there may be pleasing variations and irregularities in colour, size and shape.

In the Studio with Potter Grace McCarthy
London-based ceramicist Grace McCarthy has been making functional objects for eight years. She grew up with an appreciation of traditional craftsmanship – her father was a carpenter and often made pieces for the house. She still remembers her first lesson in pottery while studying for her Art Foundation course at Oaklands College, St Albans, when she found an affinity for the material. “It was incredible to have something so malleable, that you could do so much with it,” she explains.
