The Making of Our Regenerative Denim

Situated along an ancient stretch of the Silk Road in the Turkish region of Central Anatolia lies the city of Kayseri, home to the 70-year-old denim mill Orta.

TOAST has been working with Orta for the past five years, driven by their use of organic, locally sourced cotton and the quality of the resulting fabric they produce. “Our goal is to create ethical, long lasting and good quality denim that has a low, even positive, impact on the environment,” says Sedef Uncu Aki, Orta’s director.

The cotton used for the TOAST denim is a blend from two organic farms in east and west Turkey. Orta uses low-impact indigo dye to create deep inky denim fabric, which is left untreated, allowing the fabric to age with the wearer over time.

Denim Care Guide

Denim is a strong, durable fabric characterised by a twill weave and blue wash. It is traditionally made from cotton, though some varieties contain elastane to give it stretch. We value denim for its functionality, versatility, and how it softens with wear.

  • Wash denim sparingly to preserve colour and shape.
  • Use mild detergent and choose a wool or delicate machine setting at a maximum of 30°C.
  • Always turn inside out and fasten zips and buttons.
  • Wash with similar colours and avoid overloading the machine to prevent creasing.
  • Avoid wringing, tumble drying, and including denim in a spin cycle.
  • Press out water gently, reshape, and air dry flat or on a line.
  • Iron while damp, if needed.
  • Store folded or hang by folding over the knees with the waist down.
