Knitted with hand-dyed local wool and hand-framed by artisans supported by Manos del Uruguay, a non-profit founded in 1968 to empower women in rural Uruguay. Knitting New Futures With Manos del Uruguay
For Manos del Uruguay, the word ‘handmade’ signifies a craft untouched by technology. Since its founding in 1968, the non-profit knitwear cooperative has upheld traditional electricity-free techniques preserved by women artisans in rural communities.
Manos artisans use local, responsibly sourced yarns to create their pieces. “All our wool is of Uruguayan origin, and sometimes we mix it with alpaca fibres from Peru,” explains Ana de Prado, a designer and product manager at the cooperative. “The sheep are healthy and well taken care of.”
The lanolin-rich wool is spun by hand before being dyed and left to dry in the sun. Each knitted garment is finished manually, and labels with the artisan’s signature are attached in recognition of the hands that made it.
Knitwear Care Guide
All our knitwear is made from natural fibres, including Scottish wool, fine merino, and recycled Italian cashmere. Wool is warm, sustainable, and renewable – sheep regrow their fleece each year, and any wool waste biodegrades naturally. We harness its strength and intrinsic warmth to create insulating pieces, and its absorbent nature allows it to be easily dyed in a wide spectrum of colours.
- Wool rarely needs washing due to its breathable, odour-resistant, and naturally antibacterial fibres.
- Airing or freezing often works well. Wash by hand, as needed, in cool water with a wool detergent.
- Avoid soaking, stretching, rubbing, or using fabric softener, as it may cause pilling.
- Rinse well and gently squeeze out water, but avoid wringing.
- Lay on a towel, roll to remove excess water, and dry flat.
- To deter moths, fold in a drawer and use cedar balls, lavender, or conkers, airing garments occasionally.
- Hangers can stretch and misshape wool clothing.
- Pills can be removed with a knitwear comb.
