As autumn gathers pace, we highlight four thoughtful happenings to seek out this October. From artist-led encounters along the Kent coast to new paintings in Cambridge and a reimagining of circus in Canterbury with Gandini.
Roots in the Sky at HOME
At HOME, Manchester, Roots in the Sky is the first institutional curatorial project by British-Nigerian artist Tunji Adeniyi-Jones. The exhibition gathers new and recent works by ten contemporary artists across the United States, Europe and West Africa, considering the cultural pluralism and layered identities that define the Black diaspora, mythology and transformation through painting, sculpture and drawing.
Roots in the Sky opens at HOME, Manchester on 11 October 2025 and runs until 25 January 2026.
Gandini Juggling: Smashed at the Malthouse Theatre
Part of Canterbury Festival’s two-week celebration of music, theatre, circus and talks, Gandini Juggling’s Smashed brings together one hundred apples, a box of china cups and saucers, and a troupe of masterful performers. Traditional juggling meets contemporary circus in a witty and inventive work, set against a soundtrack ranging from Tammy Wynette to Bach. Read our TOAST Magazine article on Gandini.
Gandini Juggling: Smashed is on at the Malthouse Theatre, Canterbury on 20–21 October 2025.
Another Chance Encounter at Kettle’s Yard
At Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, Lubaina Himid presents Another Chance Encounter, a new exhibition made in collaboration with Magda Stawarska. With new paintings, a large-scale installation and interventions in the Kettle’s Yard house, the work centres on what is missing from the telling of life stories, and who is left out of narratives.
Another Chance Encounter is at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge until 2 November 2025.
Creative Folkestone Fringe
Running alongside the Folkestone Triennial, the Creative Folkestone Fringe brings artist-led walks, performances and small exhibitions to the town. Works such as Hagstone garden by Helen Easter Beeken and Alison Neighbour’s The Chalk Path root us in stone, surface and story, attentive to the landscapes beneath our feet.
The Creative Folkestone Fringe runs in Folkestone, Kent until 12 October 2025.
