Just above the little village of Soller, in the North West of Mallorca, is Nivaldo de Lima’s workshop. From the window he can see orange and lemon groves, and beyond these, the mountains. He built the workshop himself and has been working there since 1975. The leather he uses is from Italy and Spain, and sourced by local suppliers on the island. Nivaldo grew up in Brazil and learnt his trade in Paris, where he was apprentice to a traditional artisan. He still uses traditional leatherwork techniques and has a collection of vintage hand tools from all over the world. Through the years he has developed his own recipe for treating the leather. Each piece he makes has this unique finishing, giving the bags a beautiful patina that is designed to only improve with age. This season TOAST has collaborated with Nivaldo to create three tote bags, two in butter-soft, vegetable tanned calf leather and one in indigo-dyed, washed Japanese denim. They both have wide and adjustable calf leather straps with aged brass fitments, a zip fastening and internal zipped pocket. Nivaldo has only made a small number of these tote bags.
